APEX Scientific 2024
It all started as a groundbreaking concept „a learning camp”. Two words that can hardly go together lead to a camp for teens with the same passion for mathematics, who experienced the thrill of discovering unknown depths of mathematical concepts guided by university professors and doctoral students. Living together for three weeks, participants got to know each other, felt comfortable with their peers and explore a different country, a new city and, in the end, made new friends.
APEX Maths 2024 took place between August 3rd and August 24th, 2024, and was organized by ASSOCIATION INFORMART, with the scientific coordination of The Institute of Mathematics “Simion Stoilow” within the Romanian Academy, following a concept of Oriensys France. The camp was possible with the generous support of our partners – Reșița City Hall, Babeș-Bolyai University (Reșița branch), West University in Timișoara and with the financial aid of our main sponsors: Romanian Commercial Bank, Aqua Carpatica, Dacia pentru România Foundation and Constructim SA, plus the contribution of other small sponsors and individuals. 48 students aged 14 to 21 from 9 countries (USA, Canda, South Corea, Italy, France, Israel, Ukraine, Moldova and Romania) were accepted following a selection procedure based on a series of exercises to be solved by interested students.
Each week of the camp, a world-recognised professor was responsible for the morning courses (09.30 – 12.00): Andrei Neguț (first week, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, ex-MIT), Anne Morreau and Emanuele Macri (second week, Paris-Saclay Universite) and Olivier Schiffmann (Paris-Saclay Universite). On the second part of the day, the students worked on smaller groups with ten mentors: Bogdan Carasca (PhD Student, Berlin University), Clarence Kineider (PhD Student, Strasbourg University), Paul Laubie (PhD Student, Strasbourg University), Mihai Pavel (Post-Doc, IMAR), Robin Riegel (PhD Student, Strasbourg University), Thomas Saigre (PhD Student, Strasbourg University), Calin Spiridon (PhD Student, IMAR), Andrei Stoenica (Phd Student, IMAR), Romeo Troubat (PhD Student, Strasbourg University), Alexandra Melnig (Young Researcher, UAIC & IMOM),
In addition, seminars on certain topics and talks discussing papers or personal research were given by mentors, professors or students. The after-movie of the camp with images from some key moments of the camp is available below.
