From Matrices to Spectra: An Introduction to Szegő’s Theorem

In 1915, at just nineteen years old, Gábor Szegő proved an equidistribution spectral theorem for Toeplitz matrices. This remarkable result has become one of the cornerstones of real analysis in the first half of the twentieth century, with lasting impact on areas such as mathematical physics, signal processing, potential theory, functional analysis and even complex geometry.

This camp offers a gentle and self-contained introduction to this beautiful theorem.

This program is designed for students who have a strong background in highschool mathematics but does not assume any prior knowledge.

Participants’ age should be between 15 and 20 years old at the camp start. University students’ participation is not permitted.

We will introduce and focus on the following topics:
  • Linear algebra (matrices, determinants, eigenvalues)
  • Point set topology and measure theory
  • Orthogonal polynomials
  • Introduction to real analysis
  • Approximation theory
There is a two-step application process :
  • Download the selection problems, write up or scan your solutions and submit them by the deadline (April 15);
  • Authors of the best solutions will be interviewed (first two weeks of May).

Offers will be made by email starting from May 15th. Late applications will be considered until all the slots are filled.

Chișinău is the capital of Republic of Moldova. More information:

It is not our goal to do so. Of course, participation in APEX-maths will give you advantages if you decide to participate in maths competitions, but our goal is to provide you with an immersive experience in the real life of high-level mathematicians, that goes well beyond increasing your capacity to solve Olympiads-type problems. Participation at APEX-maths will surely be an advantage if you apply to top universities.

Indicative price at your charge is 1700 euros for the entire APEX-Maths camp. This may slightly vary until the final booking day. This is made possible by the very generous support of our sponsors, which covers the real cost of the event, which is in fact much higher.

IMAR is responsible for the scientific aspects of the program, while InformART is responsible for all the logistics.

If you are selected, the price includes: the Maths courses and seminars, accommodation for the entire period of APEX-Maths camp, three meals a day, free internet access on the campus, some free time activities.

Things not included in the price: travel costs to and from your home location to Chișinău, accompanying person costs (travel, accommodation, subsistence, field trips etc. for accompanying person) and minor traveller costs, travel insurance, laundry costs, extra spendings.

Can the students be accompanied by the parents?

Yes. However, the students must be housed together with the entire group, since one of the goals of the APEX-Maths camp is to create a community of young mathematicians. The parents should make their own arrangements (we can suggest Travel Agencies that can assist you).

Can I contact my child at any time?

Yes. Mobile phones will be available anytime, except for the two hours of daily lectures. There will be an emergency number as well. At all times, there will be at least two experienced staff members with the group. Medical assistance is also available on the site, should there be an emergency.

Once the participation is confirmed, the participant/legal representative of the participant will receive a set of documents including the contracts, payment details, camp regulations, full detailed programme, participant’s personal file, GDPR agreement, as well as suggestions for travel insurance etc. The camp will follow all the strict requirements of safety imposed by Moldovan legislation. Transportation and tourist activities will be organised according to the highest safety standards provided by Moldovan legislation only by authorised entities.
